Lived in Hill Top, Thornton during the time of the 1881 census and lived at 3 Mary Street, Thornton during the time of the 1891 census. Was employed as a Minder in 1891 . Lived at 4 Hill Top Road in 1931, moved to 10 Hill Top Road in 1932 until 1938. Was living at 8 Edward Street, Bingley at the time of her death in 1947. Visited the USA on 3 October 1911, travelled on the Merion from Liverpool to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Third Generation

39. William Sugden (Jesse, John) was born on 6 Jan 1855 in Thornton. He died on 7 Aug 1934 in Thornton. He was buried Thornton Municipal Cemetery. At the time of the 1901 census he was employed as a Forman in a Flat Stone Quarry, and he and his wife Emma lived at 15 Hill Top Road, then 17 Hill Top Road, Thornton until his death in 1932.

William married Emma Sharp daughter of William Sharp and Sarah Ann Ineson in Sep 1882 in Dewsbury. Emma was born on 15 Aug 1860 in Mirfield. She died on 9 May 1933 in Thornton. She was buried in Thornton Municipal Cemetery. Worked as a Wool Weaver in 1881

Fourth Generation

48. Sophia Sugden (William, Jesse, John) was born on 7 Feb 1883 in Mirfield. She died on 15 Jun 1927 in Hill Top Road, Thornton. At the time of the 1901 census Sophia was 18 years old and was employed as a Worsted Winder in Thornton. From 1920 she lived at 20 Hill Top Road.

Sophia married Thomas Burdin son of John Burdin and Louisa Hall. Thomas was born in 1880 in Thornton, Bradford. At the time of the 1901 census Thomas lived in Thornton and was employed as a Coal Miner

Thomas and Sophia had the following children:

+60Mi. Ronald Burdin was born in Mar 1907.

61Fii. Louisa Burdin was born in 1908 in Thornton. She died about 1982. At the time of her mother's death, Louisa was nineteen years old, and to her fell the task of 'bringing-up' her younger siblings, which she did very competently. Later she was married to Jack Goodison. There were no children of that marriage. Jack died prior to 1975. In 1975, Louisa was living at 21 Hill Top Road. She died prior to 1982


62Fiii. Alice Burdin was born in 1913 in Hill Top Road, Thornton. It is said that Alice had two children; a girl and a boy. Also, that her husband died on active service with the RAF in WW2

Alice married John Battersby on 15 Jul 1933 in St James Church, Thornton. John was born in 1913.

63Fiv. Eva Burdin was born in 1919 in Hill Top Road, Thornton. Sometime after her father married again in the later 1930's, Eva left the family home at 20 Hill Top Road. In 1941 her address was 42 Hill Top Road. She had two children. Twin boys. In 1975 Eva was living at 19 Hill Top Road.

Eva married Tom Robinson on 8 Nov 1941 in St James Church, Thornton. Tom was born in 1921.

49. Ineson Sugden (William, Jesse, John) was born on 1 May 1884 in Mirfield. He died on 2 Feb 1943 in Sun Inn, Thornton. He was buried on 6 Feb 1943 in Thornton Municipal Cemetery. At the time of the 1901 census Ineson was employed as a Stone Quarry Man Hewer and lived in
Thornton. From 1918 until 1935 he lived at 21 Hill Top Road, in 1935 he moved to the Ring O' Bells Hill Top Thornton. In 1938 he moved to the Sun Inn, Hill Top until his death in 1943.

Ineson married Cerina Reed in 1906. Cerina was born in 1885. She died on 31 May 1965 in Bierley Hall Hospital.

They had the following children:

64Fi. Lily Sugden  was born in 1908. She died in 1911.

+65Mii. Donald Sugden was born on 28 Apr 1913. He died on 7 Apr 1963.

51. Lily Sugden (William, Jesse, John) was born on 6 May 1887 in Slead Syke, Hipperholme. She died on 29 Feb 1948 in Thornton. She was buried on 29 Feb 1948 in Thornton Municipal Cemetery. At the time of the 1901 census she was 13 years old and was employed as a Worsted Spinner in Thornton. At the time of her marriage in 1909 she was employed as a Worsted Weaver in Thornton. She visited the USA on the 9 November 1911, she sailed on the Franconia from Liverpool to Boston, Massachusetts but returned before the birth of her son Lloyd in May 1912. In 1912 she lived at 50 Hill Top Road. Following the death of her husband Luther in 1917 she lived at 15 Hill Top Road, in 1920 she lived in 44 Hill Top Road, in 1922 she moved back to 15 Hill Top Road until 1934. From 1937 to her death in 1948 she lived at 5 Lyon Street with her daughter Cora.

Lily married Luther Pickles son of Newell Pickles and Mary Alice Waddington on 6 Jul 1909 in

Bradford, England. Luther was born in 1888 in Wilsden. He died on 7 Jun 1917 in Ypres, Belgium. He was buried in 1917 in Ypres, Belgium.

At the time of the 1891 census he was 3 years old and lived at 166 Ling Bob, Wilsden.
At the time of the 1901 census he was 13 years old, lived at 52 Victoria Street, Wilsden and worked
as a Cotton Spinner in Wilsden.
He worked as a Butcher in Hill Top Thornton. He visited the USA on the 9 November 1911, he sailed on the Franconia from Liverpool to Boston, Massachusetts but returned before the birth of his son Lloyd in May 1912. It is believed that he then owned a Fish Shop in Hill Top. In 1911 he lived at 15 Hill Top Road and then moved to 50 Hill Top Road in 1912 and in 1913 he returned to 15 Hill Top Road. He was killed in the First World War and the following is from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
"In Memory of Private LUTHER PICKLES 10th Bn., Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regt.) who died on Thursday, 7th June 1917. Remembered with Honour YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium"

Luther and Lily had the following children:

54. Wilby Sugden (William, Jesse, John) was born on 16 Jun 1893. He was a Stoker First Class in the Royal Navy in 1918. In 1922 he lived at 4 Long Row, Hill Top, then lived at 47, Watty Hall Road, Wibsey, Bradford from 1946 to 1952.

66. Lloyd Pickles (Lily Sugden, William, Jesse, John) was born on 16 May 1912. He died in 1996 in Bradford, England. He was born at 50 Hill Top Road and lived in Hill Top until his marriage in 1938. He worked for much of his life as a monumental mason. He served in the Kings Own Hussars during the World War II.

Lloyd married Alice Kathleen Pollard daughter of Claud Mainhood Pollard and Fanny Blackburn on 4 Sep 1937 in St Peters Church, Shipley. Alice was born on 7 Sep 1908 in Queens Road, Halifax. She died on 27 Aug 1995 in Bradford. She was buried on 4 Sep 1995 in Bradford.

74. John Stuart Pickles (Lloyd Pickles, Lily Sugden, William, Jesse, John) was born on 31 Mar 1947 in The Waverley Nursing Home, 315 Killinghall Road, Bradford. He was christened on 4 May 1947 in St Lukes Church, Eccleshill, Bradford. He started his working life as a woolcomber in Bradford (Trainee Manager at Thomas Henry Shaws, Wapping, Bradford). He emigrated to New Zealand in 1974 where he carried on his work as a woolcomber (Foreman, Feltex Yarns, Kakariki.) He then worked as a Training Consultant for the NZ Public Service (Industrial Training Service, Department of Labour, Government Computing Service). He returned to Bradford from New Zealand in 1990 where he continues to work in Computer Training and Graphics Design.

John married Frances Gough daughter of Charles Edward Gough and Lilian Maud Tudor on 15 Jun 1968 in Bradford, England. Frances was born on 21 Nov 1949 in 23 Rushton Terrace, Bradford. She was christened on 18 Dec 1949 in St Peters, Leeds Road, Bradford. She started her career as a trainee Nurse at St Lukes Hospital. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1974 where she lived in Feilding, Hastings and Wellington. She returned to the UK in 1990. She then worked as a restaurant manager.

79Mi. Stuart Dylan Pickles was born on 13 Dec 1968 in Bradford, England.
Stuart married Sarah Foster on 16 Apr 1999 in Bradford, England. Sarah was born on 19 Nov 1969. She died on 6 Apr 2005 in Birmingham. She was buried St Nicholas, Kings Norton in Birmingham.

80Fii. Ann-Marie Pickles was born on 31 Dec 1970 in Bradford, England.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her parents in 1974. She was educated in New
Zealand in Halcombe, Feilding, Hastings and Wellington. She works for the New
Zealand Public Service. She remained in New Zealand when her parents returned to
the UK in 1990.
